The Ranch at Timber Creek
Leadore, Idaho
The Ranch at Timber Creek is nestled in the valley between the majestic Lemhi and Beaverhead mountain ranges on the Idaho/Montana border near Leadore, Idaho. Chase and Megan Whittaker and their children run 750 cow/calf pairs on 22,000 acres of leased and owned land with Forest Service and BLM allotments. With elevations ranging from 6,500 to 8,000 feet, there is good riding all summer long.
Activities: Best known for their cattle work on horseback which revolves around the seasons.
- Gathering and branding weeks the end of May to early June.
- Trailing cattle to summer range and gathering strays in scenic country in June.
- Grazing rotation and active management riding herd health fill the days in July and August.
- Riding in early fall sorting heifer pairs and then the big gather in September when cows are trailed to the home place.
Come for more than just cattle drives; guests can join Chase in the arena for a personalized Working Ranch Cowboy School.
- Do you want to learn stockmanship? Want to learn to rope? Just let Chase know. There are weeks in the summer with a focus on roping, riding, and even a family camp. The Whittakers love their way of life and what comes with it, and they love to share it.
Although cattle work is the main attraction, guests also enjoy one mile of private access fishing. However, you do not need to be a fisherman to enjoy exploring the old homestead site and a picnic along the picturesque Timber Creek. Unwind, recharge, and connect with the land.
Suggested optional excursions include:
- Rafting the Salmon River (45 minutes away with Rawhide Outfitters)
- Ghost hunting in Montana’s first territorial capital (in Bannock State Park one hour away) with 60 original buildings, it is a time portal back to 1864.
