Woodford Ranch
Mosby, Montana
The Woodford family invites guests to share their ranching way of life and to learn of their pioneering history. In the late 1800’s Jay’s great-great grandparents homesteaded 160 acres in the middle of what is now called “Cow Basin”. The story of their determination motivates the family to this day.
The generations that followed have grown the ranch to over 17,000 acres, encompassing timbered buttes and rolling prairie stretching along the Musselshell River. The panorama unfolds south to the Bull Mountains, east to the Snowy Mountains and then on to the Judiths. From “Lookout Ridge” Grandpa Clint was convinced he could see beyond the Bear Paw Mountains for 300 miles all the way to Canada.
The Woodfords are horse people. Jay and son Cedar (23) are competitive team ropers. Daughter Malori (20) starts the colts and doesn’t quit until they are rideable. Everyone is involved in the cattle work which is all done on horseback. In her spare time, ranch wife Wyna does the quilting that decorates the ranch house.
All the necessary elements are here to make a vacation special. Not a seminar in ranching, this is an opportunity for guests to share a way of life.
Activities
- Trailing cattle to new pastures and gathering strays in scenic country fill the days from the end of May thru mid-June.
- If you want to rope or learn how, just let us know. Jay and his son Cedar can often be found evenings down in the roping arena practicing for a team roping competition.
- Plenty of riding in the summer moving cattle to fresh pastures.
- Gathering cattle in the fall as well trailing to the home place mid-October.
- Although horseback riding is the main attraction, guests also enjoy early summer fishing for catfish and the occasional walleye in the river that flows through the ranch.
