The story of how this ranch family got in to the outfitting business begins seven generations ago in 1892 when the first Todds came to Montana as cattle ranchers. Today, Brett Todd and his wife Julie invite guests to join them on pack trips into the back country. There are only 5 semi-permanent camps in the million and a half acres of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the K Lazy 3 has one of the finest in an area called the Scapegoat. When the owner of the business is actually the person guiding guests, you know you are getting the best of the best.
Brett and Julie Todd raise mules as well as cattle. Brett trains about 35 mules a year, starts them in the spring, uses them on pack trips and then sells them “guaranteed” to other outfitters and government agencies. This lends a unique aspect to the experience offered by the K Lazy 3 because it is fascinating for guests to watch a true muleskinner in action and there is usually a new mule in each pack string.
Brett is a man of action. He takes the time to do things right. He has been recognized by the Forest Service for his success in protecting natural resources and serving the public. He hosts a wilderness stewardship training program for the Forest Service. His leadership skills are recognized by the Governor, who appointed Brett as one of only three outfitters to serve on the Private Lands Public Wildlife Council.
Why do they do what they do? Brett’s love of the wilderness and his desire for others to have the opportunity to enjoy this amazingly undiscovered playground is compelling. Basically the Todds enjoy sharing their way of life and their love of Montana. The pack trips diversify their ranching operation, and provide a way for them to raise their family in the last best place.

Accommodations
- If you could use the word plush to describe a wilderness camp, Brett and Julie’s camp is the one that would come to mind. The comfort of the Main Camp includes sleeping cots with thick foam mats, a shower house, and a cook tent where everyone gathers to enjoy delicious meals and to talk over the adventures of the day. For Roving Camps they pack up their gear nearly every night and make a different camp each night.
